Common reasons a deck surface fails—and why the visible symptom should be evaluated before a repair system is selected.

Bubbles can point to trapped moisture or poor adhesion

A blister forms when part of the coating loses contact with the layer below or pressure develops within the assembly. Moisture, contamination, an incompatible previous coating or application conditions may contribute. Cutting and covering the blister without finding the cause can produce a short-lived repair.

Cracks may reflect movement below the finish

Some cracks are limited to a finish coat; others follow joints, plywood movement, concrete cracking or a transition that was not reinforced correctly. The pattern, width, location and change over time provide useful clues.

  • Cracks repeating at plywood seams
  • Movement at wall or door transitions
  • Concrete cracks telegraphing through a coating
  • Open areas around drains or penetrations
  • Impact damage or cuts from later work

Peeling often begins with preparation or compatibility

A new coating needs a clean, sound and properly prepared surface. Dust, chalking, oils, damp concrete or an unidentified existing product can interfere with bonding. Different manufacturers' layers should not be combined unless compatibility has been established.

The right repair depends on how widespread the problem is

A localized detail may allow a focused repair when the surrounding system remains bonded and the substrate is sound. Widespread delamination, recurring leaks or damaged wood usually calls for broader investigation and may justify replacement rather than another surface coat.
