Compare the surface you want with the structure and waterproofing your deck actually needs before choosing materials or colors.

Start with what is underneath the deck

An open backyard deck and a balcony above a living room have different needs. Before choosing a finish, identify the supporting structure, the space below, drainage, door heights and the existing waterproofing. A water-resistant board is not, by itself, a complete waterproof deck assembly.

Compare the material and its care requirements

Wood offers a natural appearance, with cleaning and finish maintenance appropriate to the species and exposure. Composite and PVC boards have their own installation, cleaning, movement and temperature considerations. Aluminum systems vary in construction and drainage design. Compare the specific product rather than assuming every board in a category performs the same way.

Ask for samples in the location where the deck will be used. Review barefoot comfort, texture, color, cleaning instructions, fasteners and replacement options. A higher material price does not automatically resolve an unsuitable supporting structure or an existing leak.

Understand coated plywood and concrete decks

A walking-deck coating system creates a continuous finished surface over an appropriate prepared substrate. The waterproofing includes wall and edge transitions, penetrations and the wearing surface. Plywood and concrete require different preparation and compatible systems.

For a tiled terrace, include the concealed membrane, tile-setting assembly and transitions in the proposal. Changing tile or grout alone does not establish that the waterproofing below is sound.

Compare complete project costs

Compare demolition, substrate repairs, waterproofing details, finish work, access and maintenance responsibilities along with the surface material. California Decking & Waterproofing can evaluate the waterproofing portion of a Los Angeles or Orange County project and explain which finish options fit the proposed assembly.
