Put repairs, layout, budget and waterproofing in the right order before adding finishes, shade, furniture or planting.
Set the scope and budget before choosing extras
Decide how the space will be used, who will design it and which work requires permits or engineering. A custom layout can improve access and fit, but its strength comes from proper design and construction. A custom label alone does not make a deck stronger or more durable.
Compare the complete cost of demolition, structural work, waterproofing, adjacent finishes and access. Allow for documented concealed conditions through a written approval process. Choose materials and colors once the required repair and waterproofing assembly are understood.
Compare deck material choicesMake a balcony comfortable without hiding problems
Begin with the condition of the deck, guardrails, doors and wall transitions. Arrange professional evaluation of loose railings, soft areas or leaks before decorating. Use furniture that fits the space, protect the finish from furniture feet and leave drainage paths visible.
Plants, lights and decorative screens can improve the setting. Confirm any attachments, added weight and building or HOA restrictions first. Avoid floor coverings that conceal leaks or trap moisture against the coating.
Coordinate rooftop shade, heat and waterproofing
For a rooftop deck, review the space below, the membrane condition and how furniture or shade supports connect to the structure. A canopy or umbrella can improve comfort; it also needs suitable support and a plan for wind exposure. New penetrations must be detailed into the waterproofing.
Heaters, fire features and heavy additions require their own approvals, clearances and design. Plan maintenance access and repair the deck before placing items that will be difficult to move.
Rooftop deck waterproofing servicesImprove backyard walkways and landscaping together
Map clear routes between the house, patio and yard. Consider lighting, changes in level, plants that may overgrow the path and irrigation that wets the walking surface. Choose a finish appropriate to the substrate and use; an open garden path is different from an elevated waterproof walkway.
Landscape beds, seating and decorative lighting can make the yard more inviting. Complete necessary deck repairs first, and coordinate planting or fixture work so it does not damage new coatings or block drainage.
Walkway & stair waterproofingConnect the finish to the whole property
Bring photographs of the house, surrounding surfaces and preferred colors to the discussion. California Decking & Waterproofing can explain decorative coating patterns and textures that work with the proposed waterproofing assembly. Review a physical sample before committing to a large area.
