Protect the structure around a built-in planter while keeping its soil, irrigation and drainage needs properly coordinated.

Protect the building around the planter

Built-in planters can hold moist soil against walls and sit above garages, rooms or other occupied areas. The membrane protects the planter assembly and adjoining construction. A waterproof lining alone does not prevent overwatering or root problems; drainage and planting conditions need their own attention.

Coordinate waterproofing with soil and planting work

A repair may require removing plants and soil to reach the substrate, wall junctions and outlets. Identify who handles that work, plant storage and reinstatement before pricing. The proposed assembly should include compatible membrane details, protection and any specified root-management or drainage layers.

Tremco lists planters among TREMproof 250GC applications. Product selection still depends on substrate, exposure and the complete specification; the membrane must be protected before the planter is filled.

Keep plant care from damaging the waterproofing

Ask your landscape professional to select soil, plants and irrigation for the planter's depth and conditions. Keep accessible outlets clear and remove debris. Do not drill new drainage holes or drive supports through a built-in planter without an approved waterproofing detail.

For ornamental containers, follow the container and plant supplier's drainage guidance. Protect the deck beneath pots, avoid dragging them across the finish and check for trapped moisture. Trim plants and remove dead growth while keeping tools away from exposed membrane edges.

Include commercial planters in the maintenance record

On HOA and commercial properties, record irrigation leaks, persistent standing water, cracks and stains on adjacent walls or ceilings. A landscaper may see a developing problem before occupants do. Give the landscape and maintenance teams one contact for reporting changes and retain the waterproofing installation records.
